Every nurse spends a lifetime caring for others. At the close of that journey, we believe they deserve to be honored with the same compassion, dignity, and respect they gave throughout their careers.
The Southwest Washington Nurse Honor Guard exists to ensure that no nurse’s service is ever forgotten.
A Nurse Honor Guard is a group of nurses who volunteer their time to honor fellow nurses through ceremonial tributes at the end of life or during meaningful moments of recognition. These ceremonies are performed by nurses, for nurses, as a final act of gratitude and respect.
The Nurse Honor Guard Tribute is a brief, meaningful ceremony—typically lasting just a few minutes—designed to recognize a nurse’s lifelong dedication to caring for others.
Elements of the ceremony often include:
This ceremony is often compared to military honors, as it formally recognizes a lifetime of service and symbolically releases the nurse from their professional duties.
The Nurse Honor Guard movement began in 2003 with the Kansas State Nurses Association, which developed what is now known as the Nightingale Tribute to honor nurses at the time of their passing.
The tribute was created by Janice Jones, RN, with the accompanying poem written by Duane Jaeger, RN, forming the foundation of what would become the Nurse Honor Guard tradition.
In 2005, the American Nurses Association (ANA) formally sanctioned the Nightingale Tribute as a recognized way to honor nurses at the end of life.
Inspired by traditions of military, police, and fire service honors, the Nurse Honor Guard was created to ensure that nurses—who also dedicate their lives to serving others—receive a similar final recognition.
What began as a single idea in Kansas has grown into a nationwide movement. Through conferences, professional networks, and the formation of the National Nurse Honor Guard Coalition, hundreds of local chapters now exist across the United States, continuing this meaningful tradition.
The Southwest Washington Nurse Honor Guard was founded out of a deep desire to bring this meaningful tradition to our local community.
We recognized that many nurses dedicate decades of their lives to caring for others, yet their passing is often not recognized in a way that reflects the depth of their service. Our goal was to change that.
Through both Memorial and Living Tribute ceremonies, we honor nurses with intention, compassion, and respect—ensuring their contributions are recognized and their legacy is remembered.
Mission:
To honor the lives and service of nurses through meaningful tribute ceremonies, offered with dignity, compassion, and respect.
Vision:
To ensure that every nurse is recognized for their contributions and remembered for the care they gave throughout their lifetime.
Values:
Each element of our ceremony is rooted in symbolism and meaning, honoring the profession of nursing and the legacy each nurse leaves behind.
🌹 The White Rose – A symbol of gratitude, respect, and a life devoted to caring for others
🕯️ The Nightingale Lamp – Representing the light of compassion and the enduring spirit of nursing, inspired by Florence Nightingale, known as the “Lady of the Lamp”
🤍 The Uniform – A reflection of professionalism, honor, and dedication to the nursing profession
📜 The Tribute Reading – A final expression of appreciation for a nurse’s lifelong service
🔔 The Final Call to Duty – A symbolic release from nursing responsibilities, marking the completion of a nurse’s life of service
Together, these traditions create a ceremony that is both meaningful and deeply respectful.
The Southwest Washington Nurse Honor Guard emblem stands as a visual tribute to the heart of nursing, with each element carrying meaning that reflects our mission, our traditions, and the legacy of those we honor.
We, the Southwest Washington Nurse Honor Guard, lift up this emblem as the banner of who we are and what we stand for. It speaks to the heart of the Honor Guard — our solemn duty to remembrance, our sacred calling to service, and our enduring promise to uphold the legacy of nursing. In its colors and symbols, it carries not only the spirit of our profession, but also the love, sacrifice, and devotion of those who gave their lives in care.
Placed over Southwest Washington, the white rose is the heart of our emblem. It is laid in silence, for silence speaks more than words can ever say. White holds purity, reverence, and honor — the timeless virtues of nursing. Its three evergreen leaves — past, present, and future — remind us that devotion is not bound to one lifetime. The care of nurses carries forward, living on in every life they touched.
At the center of the rose rests the golden lamp — the eternal light of our profession. Gold shines with excellence, honor, and devotion. It is the lamp that guided Florence Nightingale through long nights, the flame that gave birth to modern nursing, the beacon that has never dimmed. Placed within the rose, it shows that compassion is the living heart of all we do, and service the foundation of our honor. Just as petals shelter the rose’s center, so do we, the Honor Guard, surround the memory of our colleagues with dignity, devotion, and love.
From the lamp rises the red candle, crowned with a golden flame. Red tells of sacrifice, courage, and love poured out without measure. The golden flame is eternal — wisdom, spirit, and devotion that endure through time. Its light stretches beyond Washington’s borders, just as the reach of a nurse’s service can never be contained. Every act of care extends outward, touching lives farther than they will ever know, and its glow remains long after their work is done.
The outline of Washington anchors our emblem, drawn in light blue upon a field of deep navy. Navy carries strength, resilience, and calm — the steady foundation of our profession. Light blue is our vigil, a reminder that here, nurses are remembered with honor and peace. It is the color of watchfulness, a pledge that their service will not be forgotten, but carried forward in the hands and hearts of those who follow.
Together, these symbols form our banner. They honor the past. They bless the present. They carry hope into the future. We, the Southwest Washington Nurse Honor Guard, dedicate this emblem as our flag — a banner of remembrance, a promise of service, and an eternal tribute to all nurses whose light will forever shine.
